The town of Kalkar is known as the location of the “Schneller Brüter” nuclear plant. The project failed, and the former power plant complex was transformed into an amusement park: Kernwasser Wunderland. However, the city center emerges as an urban architectural showpiece. Presented entirely in the style of the Late Gothic are the town hall — the largest Gothic building in the Rhineland — and St. Nicholas Church, famous for its rich interior featuring nine carved altars, sculptures, and paintings. The market square is also worth a visit. Proud townhouses with beautiful stepped gables bear witness to the city's wealth at the end of the Middle Ages.
