A great scenic route - if you start the journey from the north. I can really recommend driving there even with a 2WD with some ground clearance and acceptable tires. The track is doable with some washouts but nothing too serious. However, if you head south from this point the washouts get bigger and bigger until eventually there is no road at all. If you want to continue you will be faced with dunes up to 1.5m high and you will have to cross several dry rivers for several kilometers. If you do want to go there, make sure you have off-road navigation, a very capable 4x4 vehicle and ideally a second vehicle. However, if it rains heavily while you are driving on this track, this is potentially the last off-road track. The whole area could flood if you are unlucky - it can definitely be very dangerous.
